Birmingham Vélo 100 miles complete! 6hrs 47m rolling time, total chip time 8hrs 27m
* Long post alert* there's a story to be told.
So riding to the event I suddenly developed a squeak - thankfully @cyclerepublic were on hand to give my bike a quick once over - discovering that my bottom bracket bearing was dry and probably wouldn't get me round. I honestly thought I was done for before crossing the line but they worked their magic and not only got me over the start, but their efforts got me to the finish without any bother. Thank you!
The event was tough. The start was delayed. The feed station at mile 55 ran out of food and water, and this was the station after the longest stint. The water station at mile 60 meant queuing 20 minutes to use a water barrel too.
It turned into a very hot day, so even setting out just after sunrise meant cycling through a very warm afternoon!
The setting was fabulous - the support phenomenal, thanks to @vickyyorkedesigns for supporting us TWICE on the circuit, and @djandyprice sorry I missed you screaming, at that point the struggle was very real!! Thankfully I was in a team with @baggyboy75 - each of us needed strong words at least once!
Special thanks to @katiekershaw for putting up with me throughout, for being the best support (as always), and for the amazing flapjack 😃
People have asked about how it compares to marathon running. It's very different because the effort is sustained for so long and it's not constant. Fatigue is worse, and there's a greater fear factor because on a run it's you and your legs. On this it was relying on your machine as well as fitness, and the machines of others. One guy nearly flipped after clipping a cone going down a long hill, right in front of us. It could have been disastrous. So honestly while I felt fine last night, today I'm definitely feeling it!
Anyway, we did It, we raised close to, if not over £2k for @cureleukaemia as a team, and nothing can take that experience away. Amazing!
See you next year? Maybe...I've got a marathon to run in 3 weeks first.
