I’ve worked remotely for years. Success is in the structure and environment you create. This is one of the most productive work spots for me and it’s because it is where I feel the best and think clearly. Giz and I have solved some very complex problems out on this porch!
Tips for working remotely: * Schedule your day as if you were in an office, because you are. * Use your instant messenger tool to show true availability. Don’t hide behind a dot that says you are in a meeting if you aren’t. * When people say they don’t want to bother you, stop them. I compare it to sitting at another building on campus. Half the people we work with each day aren’t within our range for a hallway conversation. You are no exception. You aren’t taking time off, your in your office. * Limit the noise from your “co-workers”. Even though I have a helper each day, I know when I have to move for a conference call. You can’t control when a squirrel will come by and distract your office mate.
