High intensity, low impact is my goal right now for cardio. Year-round, I maintain a high level of cardiovascular strength and endurance. Our body’s efficiency to deliver oxygen to its muscles is our “cardiac output”; and creating a high cardiac output goes well beyond caloric expenditure. This allows us to become more efficient at consuming and utilizing oxygen (our “muscle fuel”) during strength training, and it decreases recovery time, among many other benefits.
Once we move beyond using cardiovascular activity as a tool just to lose body fat, and begin using it as a tool to improve our “physical machine” (otherwise known as the “body”), we can become stronger, recover faster, and improve our strength and muscle gains.
Cardio doesn’t have to be a stationary movement pattern (circuit training, track work, and even basketball can be cardio activities); however, as I begin to hone in on precision with my results, I keep mine as structured and simple as possible (in addition to as low of impact as possible). This allows me to keep my recovery time shorter between strength sessions, and it allows me to have more control over my results.
