The final round of the 2004 season has seen one of the most amazing battles for the title in any series in the history of motorsports! PIAA Nakajima lead driver Andre Lotterer had 33 points, followed by Docomo Dandelion driver Richard Lyons with 29 and Mobilecast Impul driver Yuji Ide with 26! Three different drivers from three diferent teams!
Pole position was Richard Lyons, meaning that holding up that position would give him the title, no matter the results of any other drivers, for Yuji Ide only a win would be good enough and for Lotterer, just finiashing ahead of his opponents or having them out of the podium would mean the title!
It was another driver, out of the title battle who dominated the race though, that driver was Benoit Treluyer, Yuji Ide's teammate! At a certain point, with Treluyer leading, Ide in 2nd, Lyons in 3rd and Lotterer just 7th out of points zone, would mean a team order would give Ide the title and that was what everyonr at Suzuka was expecting, but team owner Kazuyoshi Hoshino had another point of view!
In the most amazing demonstration of fair play in any sports, Hoshino didn't ordered Treluyer to give up on his position, Ide would have to win the position by his own efforts! That showed once again how great Hoshino is, a real man, who values sports and sportsmanship! Ide then pushed very hard but couldn't reach Treluyer, Lyons couldn't reach Ide either, so all Lotterer needed was a 6th place to win the championship! The german tried everything but couldn't get his precious point! Treluyer won, followed by Ide and the great champion Lyons!
The final standings were amazing! Lyons and Lotterer tied up with 33 points, with Lyons winning the championship by having won a race earlier than the german! Ide finished with 32 points and the last race winner Treluyer with 30! The most amazing season finale in Formula Nippon history!
