This is a long read, but a good read, especially for and about the cosplay community. Cosplayers are an important part of the convention scene, and we love all of you... Thanks to our friends at @FC3 for sharing this and to @yayacosplay for posting it!
While cosplay is a super positive and fun activity, it also brings with it criticism. I’m no stranger to critique, and welcome it on all of my work. My latest costume project, Gamora, has received a lot of mixed feedback, and I completely understand why. It is an unconventional design and very unlike what I usually make. Some people loved my finished Gamora costume, others were confused or put off by the look. The most common critique was that the makeup and wig could be improved upon, and I want you to know that I took your feedback to heart. For New York Comic Con, I tweaked the makeup with the help of Miya Tamlyn, cut a new wig, and used a different style of contacts, and was much happier with the result. “Not your best work :/“
“I agree. It's just looks so amature compared to her other work…”
“You're a great cosplay model but this gamora is BAD”
“For the first time I see a cosplay of the great yaya han I do not like ..” Unfortunately, this type of commentary has become more and more common within the cosplay community, and I see them every day on the feeds of my friends. Even for a seasoned cosplayer like me, it was discouraging to see so many people disappointed in my creation, and I questioned whether I wanted to wear Gamora at NYCC. Ultimately, I pushed through my doubts and wore the costume with changes in the makeup and the wig, and but it took a lot of mental effort to even pack the damn thing...
