What is the answer to this new world of brokenness that we live in? I use to believe it was peace. I still kind of do, but the truth is....peace cannot come without a price. The price that we pay for peace more often than not comes with pain: but it’s where warriors are born - like the young leaders we have been watching shaking up the world. These young people in Florida have done more in days than our government has done in decades. Would these teens have found their voice if they did not face adversity? Who knows! But the truth is - if that a Fu@ked Up world is the problem, then resilience must be the answer.
If we do not teach our children to be resilient, they will be in for a rude awakening when they face the world, when they face delayed gratification, heartbreak, bullying, rejection and the many No’s they will have to face in the world. Resilience is what we need when we want to give up.
We look at people like Oprah and Malala we see greatness, we see leaders- but what we are really looking at is resilience.
I met a gentleman last night who told me about how his 20 year old marine son from Long Island was murdered in Afghanistan who is using his voice for many young people serving in our military. THAT is resilience!
I look at my kids/husband making silly faces knowing he (dad) will die in a matter of hours- THAT is resilience.
As parents we want to protect our children from pain, but the greatest gift we can offer them is the truth that the world we live in is not perfect, that it is unfair and sometimes it just doesn’t make sense.
Resilience is not something you can acquire overnight- it is a muscle that must be built. By “arming” our children with the tools they will need to survive and thrive in their own lives is invaluable. We can’t prevent the inevitable storms from coming, but we can prepare our (internal) homes for the battle. Resilience is walking in our truth, and using our super-power of resilience to change the world one person at a time, so that we can arm the next generation of resilient warriors on the quest for finding inner and hopefully one day....world peace. @oprah @humansofny @huffpostwomen @huffpost @ariannahuff
