The sun 103 Herbert Mayer edition is my watch for the #6wmshootout "Watch your Story" this week.

Last January I had just bought my most expensive watch, a new Sinn 104, and was so impressed with it I was now coveting the 103 chronograph and browsing through write-ups. I came across an article on @woundforlife about the limited edition 103 made for a German jeweler, Herbert Mayer. Only 50 were made and, since there were only a handful of other references, mainly looking back to the same article, and it was only available through the German shop, I assumed most were bought by local, perhaps non-WIS, buyers.

I was totally smitten with this edition but figured it would be impossible to find, so I set my sights on trying to find a regular 103 at a good price. I lined up a few watches to sell to fund the purchase and started browsing sales listings in earnest. After a few days of looking, and debating with myself the wisdom of spending even more money so quickly, I came across a listing for a 103 at a low price and only a couple of bidders that was due to end soon. To my amazement it was a full set Herbert Mayer, including the original receipt from the jewelers. The listing made no mention of it until deep in the description. I emailed friend about it ending with, "shhh!". I waited until the last minute and bid €1400. At that time it was at about €800 but I knew it would soar at the end. But it didn't and I won with room to spare. In those heady pre-brexit euro exchange rate days it had cost me only slightly more than my 104!

When it arrived it was everything I had hoped for but was running about an hour a day fast. I figured the hair spring was out of whack and wondered if this was the reason for the under-the-radar sale. I sent it to my watchmaker who confirmed it, fixed it and demagnitised the balance to be sure.

Since then it's been one of my most worn watches and interest in the model has grown exponentially. Every time I post it I get DMs and emails asking me to sell. People have offered more than three times what I paid for it, but I can't imagine selling it.

Sorry for the length but this is my story ☺️

If you count the hours, days, and weeks until your next getaway, this should help quite a bit.
