All you need: two blocks!
You can easily buy them online or from sports stores and yoga studios, and I'm sure you'll always put them to good use... especially when it comes to tight chest, back and shoulders. The top shows the placement of the blocks just in case you need reference.

If you're a beginner, start with A: Level 1 and slowly progress from there. I feel that B: Level 2 is still manageable and C: Level 3 is for those who are already pretty open in the back or have good awareness of their body and practice.
If you have back issues and are unsure of what to do, ask a yoga teacher/ just stick to Level 1 then slowly easing into Level 2 if you do not experience pain or discomfort.

All three options are great; listen to body and be sure that you can completely relax and breathe smoothly while in the pose. Focus on breathing deeper into the chest as you let your arms hang. Hold for 5-8 mins.

Have you ever had a yoga teacher suggest to you an adjustment that you know isn’t right for your body? I’m guessing a very high percentage of YESSSSSS out there! The one I get all the time, and I mean all the time, is to bend my elbows in downward dog. Now, my arms in downward dog look really gnarly from the front (you can see it really well in this video): they kick out at a really weird angle, and what you can’t see here (but can see from the side) is that my forearms are also unusually close to the floor, so they kick out in another weird angle as well. All of this is due to two factors: (1) I have hyper mobile elbow joints - my only hyper mobile joint and a spectacularly useless one, thanks genetics!. And (2) I have a really extreme carrying angle - which is the angle your lower arms extend away from your body when you are standing up. Basically if you have narrow shoulders and a small waist but proportionately large hips, as I do, you need this so your arms don’t bash into your hips when you walk. Anyway, put them together and you can a very odd looking down dog. But it doesn’t feel odd: I get zero pain in my shoulders/elbows/wrists and now I can hold downward dog for a really long time. But a good 75% of yoga teachers I go to try to correct it away. Even though I can do nothing about the carrying angle, and I’m not locking out my elbow joint at it’s hyper-mobile extreme point. Why am I telling you this? Because Yoga teachers don’t know everything - myself 100% included! You need to work out your own body and what works for you, yourself. Every now again a great teacher will help you unlock something (it was @dylanwerneryoga who told me about the carrying angle on my YTT earlier this year), but don’t feel you need to blindly follow instructions or assists that don’t work for you. Now every time a teacher tries to “correct” my arms in DD, I tell them it looks so extreme because of the carrying angle, and assure them I am not locking out. With a smile and a thank you of course because I appreciate their care and attention. So speak up, ask questions, and decide for yourself 💛

Poor posture puts long term stress/wear and tear on your body, leading to back pain, stiffness of the joints, tightness of the muscles, headaches, insomnia, and weak core/stabilizer muscles. How to fix it (check out our other posts for more specifics):

Left picture: too much internal rotation of the shoulders and rounding of the back. HOW TO FIX: shoulder openers, shoulder retraction strength, chest openers, head back. (Check out our last post)

Middle picture: too much pelvic tilt throwing off the spine. HOW TO FIX: open the quads, hips, strengthen the glutes, and work on postures that tuck the tailbone. .
Right picture: good posture! .

#transformationtuesday My mom has lost 48 pounds! She can walk miles without being winded by doing her at home workouts. She can grab her feet with her hands because she loves being able to stream her yoga videos. .
Recently she has quit smoking, got off all blood pressure medications and cholesterol medication by making an overall health and lifestyle change. Her headaches have gotten under control and Lupus/Fibromyalgia controlled and gives all the credit to the simple color coded meal plan! .
She says her confidence is high and her clothing fits so much better since she took up this opportunity. The support from the accountabulity groups has kept her on track during the hardest time of the year! Way to go!!

Truth- To get the leg up isn’t easy.. haha .

Even tho I dance everyday, after 30 that flexibility is work people!! - I’m actually noticing how much better my body does feel when I truly devote time each day to stretch. .
a lot of injuries happen because of certain muscle groups becoming so tight that they start pulling on other things and you compensate. So being both strong and limber is the way to go. .
