I always Love getting out on the Missouri River! After stocking up on some small bluegill and sunfish my buddy Adam and I decided to hit the river for a night of catfishing! First we stopped beside a wingdike to try and catch some skipjack for cut bait, a known favorite for river cats. Quickly Adam and I both hooked into decent size carp on our small lb test ultra light rods, which made for a hell of a fight, and a first time for me hooking into a Missouri River fish. Adam was able to land his with help from my net skills but I was broken off as soon as mine saw the shoreline (my drag was set to high). After catching some decent size skipjack, we headed to our first spot, a long flat bend in the river about 12' deep near the shore and 20+ under the boat with plenty of fallen trees and debris to make for good cover. Within the first 20 mins I'd hooked into my first Missouri River catfish, as I got him closer to the boat, I learned I'd hooked my first Blue cat, somewhere around 20" weighing around 5lbs. Unfortunately my friends decision to not use a net cost me my fish, as he pulled hold of the line the cat thrashed and gave way to my hook and swam off, and this was the only fish of the night. Hopefully next time my phone won't erase everything I filmed so I have more then this one clip... I need a GoPro desperately! As frustrating as it can be sometimes, fishing is so fun, I could do it everyday and never get bored! It's always a new adventure and always more to learn! Happy fishing everyone!
