I have always been a wiggly, on-the-move type. I am sure that is the reason I majored in Exercise Science and received a BS in 1995. Being the type who enjoyed watching and participating in all kinds of activities, when a close friend offered to take me to see a game called ‘roller derby’, I could not pass up the offer. That was the summer of 2008. I was in awe. These ladies were amazing and fast! I wanted to play.
Fortunately, the social worker at the high school that I worked at just happened to play roller derby for the league I had recently watched. I caught up with her a few days later and told her how thrilled I was to have the experience of watching a roller derby game, how tough the skaters looked and how fast they moved! She said that their league was having try outs in a few weeks and I should try out. What?! Me?! I had not been on skates since I was 12 years old.
So I pondered for a few days and arrived at the conclusion of, “what the hell, I have nothing to lose.” So in late October 2008, I showed up at the sports complex in shorts and a tee shirt (no gear), signed a liability waiver, had a number written on my arm in sharpie and stood in line with 45 other potential roller derby skaters.
Apparently I did well enough at the try outs because I was asked to join the Fresh Meat group of the Emerald City Roller Derby. After 8 months of Fresh Meat training, I was drafted to a home team and played with them for 4 years, acting as their co-captain for the last two years. I also played on the B team and in summer of 2012 was matriculated to the All-star travel team.
I moved to Japan in late 2012, joined the Tokyo Roller Girls and played on a home team as well as the all-star team. I was the All-star captain and the athletic committee head.
I moved to Arkansas in summer of 2016 and joined Central Arkansas Roller Derby, recently re-named Rock Town Roller Derby. I currently play on the Queen team, I am Captain of the Queen team, I assist in training the league and I am the athletic committee head.
October 2017 is my ninth year playing this amazing sport. I am roller derby.
