๐ŸŽˆI used to say to myself, โ€˜Sam, donโ€™t be a baby!! just workout!โ€™ even if I was super sick, but I realized after a few times of NOT listening to my body, that exercise was probably doing a lot more harm than good to get me on the road to recovery. It was also slowing down my return to normal health - and no one wants to be sick for longer than they need to be!

๐ŸคฏIn the past, I was basically beating my body into the ground like a dead horse and not giving it proper rest because I thought missing a day in the gym would ruin my progress.

๐Ÿ–๐ŸผFast forward a bit... and Iโ€™ve been doing a lot better job at LISTENING to my body. recognizing the symptoms or signs of being sick, and to what degree of โ€œsickโ€ I am. Itโ€™s an acquired skill, but honing in on the signs is a great way to prevent unnecessary sickness, injury or regression.

This is a yo yo diet cycle I lived in for years and every time the hot new diet book came out, I bought it, read every page. I subscribed to half a dozen fitness magazines. I was always looking for the secret sauce and restarting. It doesnโ€™t work.

You know what works, practice, itโ€™s not sexy or a fad diet, it just good old fashion putting the time in, making some progress, having some screw ups, getting back on track, making some more progress.

You need to build healthy habits that last a lifetime. You need to find physical activities that you actually enjoy. You need a support system.

What is one thing you can do consistently every day? Go for a walk, eat 2 cups of veggies, eat more protein? Pick one thing and do that consistently until itโ€™s easy, then pick another one.

I was finally able to hit the gym today after a week! Iโ€™ve been wanting to grow my upper back, and I have a really hard time activating those muscles. Here are some tips if youโ€™re like me: warm up with a couple handed exercises (videos) and focus on squeezing your shoulder blades together. Do a ton of seated low rows. Seriously. I did 120 today. Keep the weight light so you can focus on squeezing those shoulder blades back instead of letting your biceps do the work and keep your shoulders locked in place! It should burn!

Begin by determining your calorie intake. This will be the number of calories you burn per day minus ~500 calories depending on the context. This puts you in a calorie deficit, which causes weight loss. If you do a super large calorie deficit, you decrease adherence, increase your risk of losing muscle, and speed up metabolic adaptations causing increased hunger and a slower metabolism.

Now if you only do cardio, all that does for weight loss is burn more calories, rather than directly causing fat loss. In general, calories that you burn don't just come from fat but also from muscle. In order to preserve muscle, you must have adequate protein (~1 g/lb) and do strength training (usually 3-5 days per week). This strength training should be just like training when bulking to build muscle. You will be performing sets mostly in the 6-15 rep range (if your main goals are physique) with most sets 1-3 reps from failure. If you just do super high reps to burn calories, you will probably lose muscle mass.

Lastly, a diet means little if you cannot consistently follow it. If you force yourself to eat foods you hate, or maybe have neurotic cheat days/meals, then you are creating an unhealthy relationship with food. I suggest you incorporate some "junkier" foods you enjoy within your calorie intake. No, this is not cheating. If it is difficult to fit in higher-calorie foods like a slice or two of pizza, then save it for a weekly refeed in which you consume higher calories as a form of psychological relief.

I didnโ€™t get my workout in this morning. I woke up in the middle of the night not feeling the best so I didnโ€™t get that much sleep. So, I decided to not get up early. Even though I am feeling fine now, Iโ€™m going to have to declare today another rest day because I have too many things to get accomplished this evening.

HOWEVER, Iโ€™m not going to let that derail me. Life happens and we have to be flexible. What Iโ€™m not going to do is let it get me off track. I will be back at it tomorrow.
Right now we have two amazing opportunities going on. We have this amazing new nutrition program that is super simple to follow and lots of people have been having success with it. You donโ€™t have to cut out any food groups. You learn how to eat so that you lose weight and exercise is optional!

We also still have our amazing workout programs that have sooooo much variety and there are programs for all fitness levels.
Between these two amazing things, there is something for EVERYONE! AND what I LOVE is that this is all done the old fashioned way.....good nutrition and exercise. No pills or patches or fad diets. It really is something that you can do that is very sustainable.
I also love that it is very affordable! I just got a special group membership offer the other day for the YMCA and I found it very interesting that the cost of a 1 year membership for 1 adult was quite a bit more than it is to use these workout programs that Iโ€™m using. The thing is with the Y membership is that one price was only for one adult and what you get with the programs that I use can be used for the entire family for the same cost. It doesnโ€™t cost extra for the family to do the workouts or learn about the nutrition. You really do get more for your money.
