Leg Extensions- Solid contraction followed by 4 second negatives. Time under tension baby!

Leg extensions are the one exercise that when your quads are fully locked you have the same weight tension as the negative! Ex when at the full positive on a squat, you're standing, and there is not a gnarly tension on the quads! Leg extensions put same tension on the contraction as the stretch

Tip 👉 I have had many people ask why I put a pad under only one shin. The answer is because some equipment, the way they are designed (aka poorly) allow the foot pad over time to bend and angle more than the side closer to the arm. Basically making it so one leg contracts higher than the other. Putting a pad under my left leg thickens the pad to make it more even!

This week in The Muscle PhD Academy we built on last week’s topic, which was quadriceps.
1️⃣The first lesson this week discussed front squats vs back squats on quads activation showing that front squats cause greater activation on the quads than back squats.
2️⃣The second lesson looked at stance width on quads and glutes activation showing that a wider stance increases glutes activation in a squat compared to a narrow stance.
3️⃣The third lesson looked at middle quads (rectus femoris) activation when comparing squats to leg extensions. This study showed that when performing a leg extension, there is greater middle quads activation than when performing a squat.
4️⃣The last lesson looked at foot position when performing leg extensions. This study showed that when turning the feet outward there is greater activation in the middle quads. However, when turning the feet inward there is greater activation in the inner and outer quads.

Today’s topic in The Muscle PhD Academy addresses the front and back squat variations. The front squat causes individuals to sit upright during the movement relative to a backsquat, which causes more forward lean of the trunk. Forward lean slightly engages the hamstrings more and takes some tension off of the quads. Therefore, even though the front squat does not allow for as much weight lifted it does cause relatively greater activation of the quads and may be less stressful on the back. Ultimately, both variations of the squat will be excellent sources of quadriceps growth.

Today I hiked for almost 6 miles through the Austin Greenbelt.The Barton Creek Greenbelt is an Austin GEM. One of the things that make Austin so unique is the city's dedication to maintaining green space for residents. This is my magical little spot in the middle of the city ❤️.

The start of the trail is basically the top of the Hill of Life. This section of trail is quite a workout because it's only a little over 1/4 mile long, but 300 ft. in elevation, so it's quite steep and an excellent workout. It's littered with loose rocks that make for difficult traction, and there are those concrete ledges to hop up and over, each one snapping a rider's momentum.

There also is no protection from the sun, as the canopy of trees that lines the rest of the trail disappears. It's brutal. It was 100 F today so it was a little more difficult but I always like a good challenge. .

All in all, it was a Saturday well spent. . . . . . . . . . . .
