A new Cochrane review on Omega 3 supplements and heart health hit the headlines yesterday. This is the most extensive study on the topic which has summarised all good quality evidence up to date (79 studies, over 112,000 people).🎓

The main types of Omega-3 fats are: 2 long-chain fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) from oily fish and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) from plants. Generally, all of them are thought to benefit heart health.🔬 .
Let’s look at the main findings.🔍

Having more Omega-3s from oily fish:
.
☑️ has little/ no effect on risk of cardiovascular events (such as heart attack) and all-cause death
☑️ probably makes little/ no difference to stroke and arrhythmia
☑️ slightly reduces triglyceride levels in blood and helps raise good cholesterol levels (HDL), however, taking supplements probably will not protect from heart disease or stroke anyway. .
Having more Omega-3 from plant sources (rapeseed, soya, flax, linseed oils, and walnuts):
.
☑️probably makes little/ no difference to risk of coronary heart disease
☑️probably is slightly protective for some other types of heart diseases and arrhythmia.
.
There are a few factors to consider:🤔

The majority of the studies used supplements, not natural food sources. Most nutrients, however, are much better absorbed in their natural form.🍽️🍛
.
❓The results show that EXTRA Omega-3 has little effect on heart health. But it’s not known how much of Omega-3 the participants already consumed as a part of their usual diet. Did they eat less than recommended? Or were they already getting enough, that’s why there was no effect?
.
❓The majority of the participants already had heart disease, therefore, it’s hard to say if the results can be applied to healthy people.
.
Bottom line: this extensive review backs up the current NICE UK guidelines regarding the role of supplements in prevention of heart disease. The present UK advice to consume 2 portions of fish/ week, one of which should be oily, remains unchanged.🎏 Remember, oily fish is a great source of protein, vitamin D and selenium, too!👌

For my Omega-3 needs, my supplement of choice is @atp_labs Omega 3 triglyceride fish oil, I take 1 teaspoon after my workouts and 1 teaspoon before I go to sleep. Consumption of EFA's not only suppress inflammation, but they also make cells healthier by improving cell membrane function. I also consume fish oil to protect my eyes and probably the most important reason to promote my brain health!
