Three things must come together for fire to burn: fuel, oxygen and sufficient heat. To stop the fire, you need to remove one of the elements.
In this video Oxygen is removed. Removal of oxygen is called Smothering. When the fire runs out of Oxygen, it dies naturally. Covering the burning equipment cuts off oxygen supply. This is why covering pots, containers, wrapping in blankets or coats and covering gas cylinders as shown in this video can put out a fire.
