MY FAVOURITE LOGOS. ⠀
Warner Brothers (1972), by #SaulBass.⠀

We’re finally up to W in the series, and funnily enough I’m in the middle of a branding project that features a W mark. Unfortunately, it’s not ready to include here yet, and I’m reluctant to show any development work until the project has been signed off. Alas, I have a classic backup...⠀

It’s no secret of mine that my favourite designer of all time is the absolute master, Saul Bass. He is followed by the modern legend @draplin, who also states Mr. Bass as a major influence. Saul Bass was an accomplished graphic designer, creating iconic corporate branding for companies such as Alcoa, AT&T, Bell, Kleenex, Girl Scouts, United Airlines and United Way—but as a huge movie buff it was originally his work in film that led me to discover and revere him. You’ll have come across some of his classic film poster and kinetic typography title sequence work over the years, having worked with such legendary filmmakers as Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese. ⠀

In 1972, Bass was approached by Warner Brothers to rebrand the studio. He created a stylised and minimalist W from three thick, rounded, diagonal strokes. It was striking in its simplicity, but many will agree that it appears a little aggressive and oppressive. Almost like it would precede a propaganda spot from a fascist regime. It was used until 1984, when the studio returned to a slightly altered version of the logo that had been in use for decades earlier, and which remains the basis for the logo in use today. ⠀

Bass' iconic but corporate logo was given a retro callback when it was used at the beginning of the 2012 films Argo and Magic Mike.⠀

MY FAVOURITE LOGOS.
Lucasfilm (1988). Introduced in 1988, and replacing the existing plain-text presentation, seeing the art-deco Lucasfilm logotype before a Star Wars or Indiana Jones session always gives me the feels. Bold, epic and conveying a theatrical sense of grandeur, it perfectly sets the scene and the mood for a thrilling adventure to come. .

MY FAVOURITE LOGOS.
James Bond 007 (1962), by David Chasman.

There have been a few different treatments and refinements to the 007 ‘gun’ logo since its first appearance in 1962’s Dr. No, including some clever typographic treatments in Thunderball, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
Designed by United Artists’ David Chasman, the 007 logo features dynamic italicised type, with the number 7 acting as the grip of Bond’s gun and the silhouette of the trigger and barrel carrying forward off the type’s momentum. It’s a bold visual. A strong statement. Simple, but so damn effective. Just like Bond. James Bond. .

MY FAVOURITE LOGOS.
Jurassic Park (1993), by Sandy Collora.

One of my all-time childhood favourite films, and one that visually still holds its ground today, Jurassic Park is home to another one of film’s most iconic logos.

The logo used for the film (and subsequently used within it for the actual park), was designed by concept artist Sandy Collora, based on designer Chip Kidd’s 1990 cover design for Michael Crichton’s novel. If you’re interested in hearing Kidd’s entertaining story about the design of this cover, check out his terrific TED talk.

The Jurassic Park logo is an amazing example of a relatively simple visual idea that commands an enormous presence. .
