“Low risk. Low Reward.”
-•-
A term often used when dealing with finances, but it has carryover to many other areas of life. In this case, we see it applied on a daily basis in the gym.
-•-
Zero Risk: Never put in work.
Zero Reward: Never see change.
-•-
Low risk: go through the motions, pace too much, stay away from potential pain / discomfort.
-
Low Reward: You’ll never reach your full potential by settling for mediocrity that you know you can be fixed by simply taking more / better action.
-•-
High Risk: Go big or go home. All in. #YOLO
-
High Reward: It might seem like a good idea at the time. It may even be amazing in the short term. Over the long haul? It is a short lived game and leads to dysfunction and disorder.
-•-
If we are looking for sustainable high performance, the magic lies somewhere in between. Unfortunately, it takes experience to find this sweet spot.
-•-
Using today’s workout as an example, we are presented with multiple options. Low risk would be failing to push the pace to avoid the discomfort that is directly proportional to intensity. High risk would be coming out too hot in an attempt to set a record despite what your body / mind is telling you.
-•-
The 3rd option is knowing your needs and taking the optimal approach to maximize your output accordingly. Today, I am happy to say I did just that. Start out just under my old PR pace and then try to get better each round based on feel instead of preconceived rep schemes. While I did not set a new PR, I was truly able to push my relative threshold without imploding and without feeling like I left any reps on the table.
-•-
At this point in life, I’ll take this optimal approach any day of the week.

Meet @razorramon2481 . Dude came in already fit for sure but he has the " I can always improve" personality. In his Fundamentals Program we've been getting him up to speed on movements he is unfamiliar with and also advising him on nutrition and logging his workouts. He'll be joining the small group sessions next week and transitioning with flying colors. 😎
