Sharing the latest evidence on fetal monitoring during labor with my HypnoBirthing class. It’s so important for expecting parents to make informed decisions about their birthing day! #sharetheevidence #ebb #evidencebasedbirth #informeddecisions #fetalmonitoring #informedparents #informedpregnancy #hypnobirthing @ebbirth

Our cat, Charlie, and I had a fumble the other day. It ended in me stomping on him, tripping, tossing taco shells about the kitchen and essentially hurting myself pretty bad. I spent last evening at the maternity ward being monitored, which is standard after a fall/accident/impact where we are. It was lovely to get some quiet time and hear beans heart pumping away for 4 hours (except the IV sucked, needles are gross). Though the pain hasn't subsided and I am not on official bedrest - it showed me I really need to slow down. Life with 3 littles is anything but slow but I am going to try my hardest to lay low this weekend! How did you make sure you took it slow when necessary in pregnancy?

ON SALE! Huntleigh Sonicaid FD1 Heart Rate Display Doppler is currently $622.75 (plus GST). Don't delay - this hard to beat price ends on Saturday 30th June - find out more https://goo.gl/KowpKW

A rare and fatal pregnancy complication!
This picture shows uneven umbilical cords in twin-twin transfusion syndrome in monochorionic twin pregnancy, where the twins share a single chorion, which initially serves to provide nutrition to the developing embryo and later gives rise to the placenta.
This is a complication of disproportionate blood supply and occurs when one twin receives the majority of the nourishment, causing the other twin to become undernourished.
The smaller twin with oligohydramnious which also called "stuck twin" that pumps away blood is termed the donor twin while the larger twin receiving extra blood is termed the recipient twin.
The donor twin, who is becoming dehydrated, does not produce as much urine as it should, resulting in a low amount of amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios) and fetal growth restriction.
The recipient twin, whose system is overwhelmed by too much fluid, produces more urine than usual. This eventually leads to an enlarged bladder and excess amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios). The excess fluid can put a strain on the recipient twin’s heart, sometimes leading to heart failure.

As you can see there are pros & cons to fetal monitoring. In a homebirth & at a birth center, fetal monitoring is done with a doppler. Even though (some) hospitals have wireless monitoring, the focus tends to be on the monitors vs how the mom is feeling - I personally have seen this with a client! Remember, hospitals are ALWAYS thinking worst case scenario. If they cant find the baby's heartbeat, it may send you into a panic. And panic is NOT conducive to birth. It can extremely slow or stop labor.
If you plan on having a hospital birth, please HIRE A DOULA! It doesn't matter what type of birth you're having, Doulas are necessary.

When we (@sacredborn) were in Tanzania we learned all sorts of new things from the doctors and nurses... our scope of practice was stretched but not broken. We learned about going back to basics- especially compared to our medical industry that has changed birth and our relationships to our bodies so much... This device is a FETOSCOPE. We were taught how to use them to find the baby’s heart beat. It makes my own heart flutter remembering how powerful that experience was. As doulas and westerners we don’t get that kind of opportunity too often. This method is a little challenging to learn, but so rewarding to accomplish!! Sonograms and Doppler’s produce radar waves and radiation. Like a microwave, not a too big a deal, but not necessary in healthy pregnancies.
Let us reclaim our divine feminine powers and instincts! .

Do you know the risks and benefits of electronic fetal monitoring? And for those of you who have given birth before, did your provider explain them to you, allowing you to have informed consent? @ebbirth has some great information about fetal monitoring on their feed and their website right now. .

@ebbirth Showing some of the results in studies about fetal monitoring. If mother and baby are healthy I prefer intermitent monitoring so there is more freedom of movement.

The fetal surface of a normal term identical Monochorionic twin placenta is seen here.
Monoamniotic twins are identical twins that share the same amniotic sac within the uterus. They are always identical, always monochorionic and are usually termed Monoamniotic-Monochorionic (MoMo) twins. They also share the placenta, but have two separate umbilical cords.
In such pregnancies, cord entanglement, malformations, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome and prematurity are possible complications.
Cord entanglement occurs due to close proximity and absence of amniotic membrane separating the two umbilical cords makes it particularly easy for the twins to become entangled in each other’s cords, hindering fetal movement and development.
Additionally, One twin may compress the other’s umbilical cord, potentially stopping the flow of nutrients and blood and resulting in fetal death.
Twin-twin transfusion syndrome occurs when one twin receives the majority of the nourishment, causing the other twin to become undernourished.
Against all odd, the survival rates is still as high as 95% with aggressive fetal monitoring using frequent ultrasound exams, non-stress test, and biophysical profile.

Most likely if you have birthed in a hospital, you have had electronic fetal monitors strapped to your belly. Since their introduction in the 70's, the US cesarean section rate has risen over 500% (this is not saying that they are solely responsible but are a contributor). They are commonly used and relied upon but evidence shows they don't improve birth outcomes. You have the right to decline consistent monitoring and discuss other options with your caregiver.
