PSA******repost from a woman on fb! Great info!! Pass along!!#microchip
LOTS of people come in who have found a lost dog. We generally will scan for a chip, and give the chip number to the finder for them to call a microchip company for them to look it up. Let me just tell you, that if I have time, I will call for them. Almost all the time, I have people calling back saying the chip wasn't registered and the owner couldn't be found, and asking what the next step is. Recently, I have been asking those people for the chip number so I can call, just to make sure it really isn't registered. Come to find out, a lot of people have no idea that if you don't call the right company, the chip will show up as being unregistered within their system. So what I normally do is this-
I look at the chart below and see if any of the chip numbers directly correlate with a company. If so, I call the corresponding company. If not, I go to the website (also listed below) and type in the number. If no owner information shows up, I call the company that comes up, and ask them to look it up for me.
3 times now, I have been able to track down the owner of an "unregistered" microchip. 3 different times, an animal would have ended up at the shelter, or back out on the streets. #greatinfo #psa #feralcat #tnr #cats #dogs #catsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #colonycaretaker #colonycats #rescue #coi
