About MOCHI side-table
Nagano Industries, Co. Ltd. was established in 1948 and is situated in Maki, Nishikan Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. In the beginning, the company used to manufacture wooden handles for agricultural instruments and was successful. Presently it manufactures and sells a lot of wooden products made with hinoki cypress and empress tree materials. It produces a big percentage of ricecake-pounding pestles in Japan. Ricecake tools are manufactured and sold over the turn of the year in a big amount because ricecakes are one of the important New Year’s food in Japan.
The square timbers are made into cylinders to be made into ricecake-pounding pestles. If the thus manufactured cylindrical timbers have cracks and/or nodes then, they are set aside. The original square timbers are so big that it needs a number of processes to make cylindrical timbers. As the manufacturing of cylindrical timbers takes a lot of processes, those wooden pestles with cracks and/or nodes are sold as B-class outlet ricecake-pounding pestles, but even so, there are always some leftover pestles.
So as to make use of the leftover ricecake-pounding pestles, we designed our MOCHI side-table, where mochi means ricecake. The table uses three pestles as its legs, which makes it stable. The legs have been chamfered and made roundish in the same way as the real mochi-pounding pestles which make into the markets. You will take home the parts and assemble them yourself with ease. This strategy cuts manufacturing and transport costs and keeps the price of the table low. As the pestles which are set aside for cracks and/or nodes are not abundant every year, the mochi side tables are not manufactured in a big number, which makes it even more precious.
