Some books we love now/forever

So many of us grew up on a steady diet of books written by white, male writers. These were the books taught in our schools, considered classics, ‘real literature'. How did so many of us start reading books written by women then? Time and opportunity. Maybe a book bought by chance, not on the school-approved reading list, a novel considered ‘chick lit’ that was actually fantastic or texts recommended to us by other women. Within the collective we are constantly talking about books written by women, enthusiastically recommending them to each other and talking about how they have helped us negotiate life, love, activism, literature and the everyday.

The following is a list of books that have impacted us as feminists, strengthened our resolve to fight, made us cry because we recognise so much of ourselves in their stories, made us laugh for perhaps the same reason.

This list is a mix of classic and contemporary, fiction and non fiction by various amazing women. More power to them.
Note: Some of us have also mentioned why we think the books we’re recommending are so great. Happy reading!

Some early morning Sunday reading... I may be behind the times, but I've never read this! Someone told me it would make for a good required read for first-year college students. You agree? #weshouldallbefeminists #feministreading #feministbookclub #FemU

Layovers are for reading! #theorycanbefun #feministreading

◼◼◼❇◼◼◼❇◼◼◼❇◼◼◼❇◼◼◼

Last week, I finally started a self-love challenge I signed up for MONTHS ago through @herfiercelife.
It fills the very beginning of my morning with mindfulness, exercise and self-love. I end it with making myself breakfast and settling in to do something for me. Today, my routine is a little disrupted by a weekend trip with my folks, but I still found time to read my new copy of @gotagirlcrush and sip a hot cup of decaf coffee with vegan eggnog. Slow mornings are the right kinda mornings for me and my anxiety.

This weekend, #FIIRecommends reading Pethavan, a compelling tale on the oppression that exists in society along the lines of caste, 'honour', and the policing of women's sexuality.

If there were two non -fiction books from 2017, I would recommend reading, then definitely these two. Easily two of the most important releases of the year. #DearIjeawele #afeministmanifesto #HereWeAreFeminismForTheRealWorld #feministreading #feministliterature #books #chimamandangoziadichie #bookworm #reading

I had to read this for my MA, but I've had this book for a while and it wasn't until I had to read it that I found I really should have done it sooner. If you want a gritty account by feminists that gets allll up in yoooo face, then I recommend #laurapenny #ma #postgraduate #feminism #feministreading #unspeakablethings

#JaneEyre #CharlotteBrontë #JaneEyreNTLive #NationalTheatreLive

Critics weren’t simply being polite when they said that this was a refreshing, original and thought-provoking reinterpretation of Brontë’s 1847 Novel.
Feminist readings have become inevitable and strikingly necessary as the revisiting of texts allows us to applaud and acknowledge the tremendous efforts women, writers and artists have made to advocate gender equality.
What truly astonished me with NT Live’s 2015 production (now showing in VIESHOW cinemas, Taipei) was the theatrical innovativeness invested in the narrative. By stripping down the stage to it’s bare frame and allowing actors to rotate and intertwine between characters, the essence of the narrative, the dialogue and the purity of Eyre’ soul itself. I was particularly swept away with Madeleine Worrall’s performance. Her ability to craft detail into the younger stages of Eyre’s life was more than convincing, it was sublimely touching.
Jane Eyre reminds us that there is always a woman in the attic, and Eyre, although by circumstance was not the one caged by Rochester, yet she has been accused in the form of heresy and satanism for simply being a woman speaking her mind and soul. The production features a mystic soprano echoing an enchanting soundtrack from the birth of Jane Eyre. She eventually stands as Rochester’s estranged wife at the end of the story, thus offering a curious parallel depicting the simultaneous otherness of women who dare showed their emotion, passion, and thoughts to the world they lived in.

Requisite reading material.💁

Working on creating my nightly routine to incorporate a little reading. Currently finishing My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem ❤️❤️❤️ You see routines are great, and honestly I thrive when I have a routine to stick to. 👈That is something new that I’ve learned about myself in the past year. I’ve always thought I was pretty easy going, go with the flow which I am and can be. But sometimes it’s nice for me to have a routine and even rituals for things like going to bed or getting ready in the morning, or starting and ending the classes I teach. I always hope I can maintain my routines and rituals but often I just don’t stick with them, which I think is a good and bad thing depending on the circumstances. But I shouldn’t get frustrated because I didn’t have time to read one night, or I forgot pack my lunch the night before. Rituals and routines are nice but life is not predictable. Things change. Incorporate routines to bring structure and intention but don’t allow them to chain you to an expectation (👈this is for me!) For me it’s all about integrating my beliefs in mindfulness and mental health as I establish new routines for myself and maybe discard some old ones.
I have not been as visible during this #selflovebootcamp but this is a part of my journey even if it’s not a specific challenge. I have found myself reflecting more independently to find out more of what works for me. Thank you @omgkenzieee for always inspiring my personal reflection and encouraging all of us to continue growing!
