I went to the Australian Babywearing Collective Conference at The Powerhouse today to hear Clem Ford speak. Who'd have thought that you could have around 100 babies and toddlers and their mums in an auditorium (without The Wiggles) and hear yourself think or speak. But Clem did just that in a frank and personal expose on her pregnancy and her post-natal experiences. She drew to our attention the significance of ante-natal anxiety which is often given scant attention, but for some women can be disabling and dramatic in its consequences. What was best was her raising the issue of the silence around pelvic floor issues such as prolapse and urinary incontinence that often accompanies the joy of the birth of any child. It is a shock to many women, because there can sometimes be a mentality that - 'That happens to other women, not me' and take no notice of any information that they may come across during the ante-natal period and therefore be completely unprepared for what can happen. Other brave celebrities who have 'come out' about their pelvic floor issues are Kate Winslet and Whoopi Goldberg and allowing this information into the public sphere breaks the silence (and shame) that notoriously accompanies incontinence (urinary and faecal) and prolapse. Traumatic birth injury not only leads to pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD), it can contribute to significant Post Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD) which until recently has been completely ignored and under-diagnosed - and women are told to just get on with caring for that beautiful baby rather than acknowledging the changes -FOREVER sometimes, many times- to a woman's anatomy and her very sense of being female. Now there is a not-for-profit charity been established by Amy Dawes, Professor Peter Dietz and Elizabeth Skinner acknowledging just this - Australasian Birth Trauma (www.birthtrauma.org.au) - and the resources that will become available to women to access will be very helpful for future women who encounter these difficulties with a delivery of their baby. Well done Clem #pelvicfloormatters #feminismmatters

I'm so sad to see the Obamas go they've done so much for those who are underrepresented in this country I can never even begin to express my gratitude ❤#feminismmatters #equality #lovetrumpshate #lovewins

I got a tiny little Venus symbol tattooed on my finger today. Whenever I'm finding it tough to be a woman I'm going to look to it for strength. #FeminismMatters

In a patriarchal society with fragile masculinity that goes unquestioned far too much what role do you play? Feminism does not mean women hate men or all men for that matter. We believe men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. #effyourgenderroles #feminismrules #feminismmatters

There's more support for clearing up mixed signals also on Tuesday, as messenger Mercury effectively ends a retrograde that began on August 12. We've had our share of misunderstandings, crossed wires, screwed up schedules (and deliveries!) over the past few weeks. And when Mercury retreated from Virgo back into Leo on August 31, it was impossible to NOT take everything personally. The communication planet's course correction couldn't come too soon. Until Sunday, he'll hover in Leo, giving us an opportunity to talk through last week's dramas and hopefully hug it out. This is also a cosmic green light to get your fall fashion game up to snuff. Are you representing true to form? Mercury in Leo likes highly personalized visual cues. Say it with an edgy haircut, bright red trench, even monogrammed accessories. Then, on Sunday, Mercury joins Mars and the Sun in Virgo, lending his clever lifehacking to our autumn efficiency missions. - @astrotwins
