Winifred Knights, "The Deluge" 1920. Oil on canvas (5'x6'). Originally applauded as a visionary genius, Knight emerged on the British art scene as a strong early propionate of modernism- over the course of her career she struggled to maintain the success and recognition that came easier to male peers of lesser talent. After her death in 1947 she was virtually written out of the history of modern painting. #winifredknights #thedeluge #1920 #femalemodernists

In #Denver, #Colorado? The Curator #citygallerymuseum recommends a visit to the @denverartmuseum to view the groundbreaking exhibition, #WomenofAbstractExpressionism, celebrating the often unknown #femaleartists of this mid-twentieth-century art movement. More than 50 major #paintings are on view by artists working on the East and West Coasts during the 1940s and '50s: Mary Abbott, Jay DeFeo, Perle Fine, Helen Frankenthaler, Sonia Gechtoff, Judith Godwin, Grace Hartigan, #ElainedeKooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Deborah Remington, and Ethel Schwabacher. This is the first presentation of works by these artists together at one time. Women of Abstract Expressionism focuses on the expressive freedom of direct gesture and process at the core of abstract expressionism, while revealing inward reverie and painterly expression in these works by individuals responding to particular places, memories, and life experiences. Seldom Trying for Love
Fantasy dealt them out as gods
Two or three men looked only human

But you alone
Superhuman apparently
I had to be caught in the weak eddy
Of your drivelling humanity To love you most --from "Songs To Joannes (1917)

Happy birthday Eileen Gray. The furniture designer, architect and one of the main, and certainly one of the most interesting, creative forces behind the modern movement who was born this day in 1878. A huge inspiration.

Georgia O'Keeffe, "The Lawrence Tree". 1929 oil on canvas. I just can't imagine ever growing tired of her work- this is a particular favorite, it's such a familiar vision- a tree, or a painting of a tree but startling in its ingenious shift in perspective, a point of view we've all see countless times but that few up to this point had ever attempted to depict and she pulled it off so gracefully. Seemingly materialist and secular in subject, I think it's one of the most powerful covertly spiritual paintings ever produced by an American painter. For me It elicits an emotional response similar to the one that arises when reading Whitman, I suppose I could say the same thing about many of her paintings. #georgiaokeeffe #thelawrencetree #1929 #femalemodernists
