November 2007 — Abby and me at her parents’ house. This is our first picture together. We’d only been officially dating for less than two months here and were headed to a Dane Cook concert. To put that into perspective, when this picture was taken, George W. Bush was still president, phones still flipped, and the Dane Train was still chugging along.
This was also the “Meet the Parents” weekend where I spent the entire weekend at her parents’ house for Thanksgiving for the first time. No, her father didn’t pull a Di Nero and hook me up to a lie detector, but it started his epic decade-plus attempt to troll me into a political argument.
You see, my father-in-law is very conservative and would vote for a tree stump if it had an “R” next to its name. When I’m over, he makes sure to have Fox News on and say things like, “You know, Gordon, FDR’s economic policies actually made the Great Depression worse.” So far, I’ve had Green Lantern-level willpower and haven’t engaged. One day, I’m going to break and be like, “Actually, Zach, GDP continued to rise and unemployment decreased until he listened to conservatives after the ‘36 election and started to rein in the deficit by raising taxes and cutting spending before the economy was fully recovered.”
