"Oft, in the stilly night, 'ere slumber's chain hath bound me, fond memory brings the light of other days around me..." #thomasmoore

I woke up with this poem on my heart today and then it was mentioned randomly in a couple different homeschooling lessons, so I’m taking it all as a sign from the universe that it needs to be shared. #rudyardkipling #favoritepoems #goals #homeschoolingmama

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.

I want to know if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments. - Oriah Mountain Dreamer

Coming Up on September
by Marge Piercy

White butterflies, with single
black fingerpaint eyes on their wings
dart and settle, eddy and mate
over the green tangle of vines
in Labor Day morning steam.
The year grinds into ripeness
and rot, grapes darkening,
pears yellowing, the first
Virginia creeper twining crimson,
the grasses, dry straw to burn.
The New Year rises, beckoning
across the umbrellas on the sand.
I begin to reconsider my life.
What is the yield of my impatience?
What is the fruit of my resolve?
I turn from the frantic white dance
over the jungle of productivity
and slowly a niggun slides,
cold water down my throat.
I rest on a leaf spotted red.
Now is the time to let the mind
search backwards like the raven loosed
to see what can feed us.
Now, the time to cast the mind forward
to chart an aerial map of the months.
The New Year
is a great door
that stands across the evening and Yom
is the second door. Between them
are song and silence, stone and clay pot
to be filled from within myself.
I will find there both ripeness and rot,
What I have left done and undone,
What I must let go with the waning days
and what I must take in.
What I have done and undone,
With the last tomatoes, we harvest the fruit of our lives.

The Figured Wheel by Robert Pinsky

This has been a busy summer, and going back to school (teaching) is always a bit melancholy. Reading a few poems from this collection in the mornings gave me a sense of clarity and made me feel connected to some of the things that I’ve always valued.
From one of my favorites, “Ceremony for Any Beginning”: “Against weather, and the random

Harpies—mood, circumstance, the laws

Of biography, chance, physics—

The unseasonable soul holds forth,

Eager for form as a renowned

Pedant, the emperor's man of worth,

Hereditary arbiter of manners.

Soul, one's life is one's enemy.

As the small children learn, what happens

Takes over, and what you were goes away.

They learn it in sardonic soft

Comments of the weather, when it sharpens

The hard surfaces of daylight: light

Winds, vague in direction, like blades”

Sandra’s seen a leprechaun,
Eddie touched a troll,
Laurie danced with witches once,
Charlie found some goblins gold.
Donald heard a mermaid sing,
Susy spied an elf,
But all the magic I have known
I've had to make myself.

I wanted to be sure to reach you;
though my ship was on the way it got caught
in some moorings. I am always tying up
and then deciding to depart. In storms and
at sunset, with the metallic coils of the tide
around my fathomless arms, I am unable
to understand the forms of my vanity
or I am hard alee with my Polish rudder
in my hand and the sun sinking. To
you I offer my hull and the tattered cordage
of my will. The terrible channels where
the wind drives me against the brown lips
of the reeds are not all behind me. Yet
I trust the sanity of my vessel; and
if it sinks, it may well be in answer
to the reasoning of the eternal voices,
the waves which have kept me from reaching you. - Frank O’Hara, “To the Harbormaster”

One of my all-time favorite lines in a poem. "Beneath the Shadow of the Freeway" by Lorna Dee Cervantes. And it's so true. Myth is important for inspiring us to be self-sustaining and to build and create for ourselves. We need imagination to see possibility and dream. But it's also true that we need to be able to create our own myths rather than relying on the ones that others feed to us. Myth and narrative is power, so to truly have power we must take back our mythologies. #empowerwomen #favoritepoems #californialit #latinawriters #alwaysreading #alwayswriting #questioneverything #defynarrative #mythology #folklore #folktraditions #storytelling #tellyourstory #inspiration #dailythoughts #selfmotivation #keepmovingforward #mythispower #recommendedreading #writerslife
