I took the @freefigure fat census today and it reminded me why the #bodypositivity movement feels like complete & utter bullshit to so many people. You see, @freefigure's fat census is revolutionary as fuck- it epitomizes the goals of #fatacceptance & #fatpositivity in a way that actually made me glad to see a lengthy google doc for once. But #bodypositivity, one of #fatpositivity's proverbial children, has much less clear goals- it's been gentrified and diluted to the point where anyone with an Instagram can appropriate the movement for their personal gain. Even though I generally advocate for body positivity, I can't deny that I'm frequently flummoxed by some of the people and corporations who claim to identify with the movement- it's like watching the laziest bunch of wolves in sheep's clothing ever. And I can't say I really care about trying to steer the ship a different way- frankly, once the oppressor has started wearing your clothes, it's usually time to find a new outfit.
If you identify as fat (or whatever word makes you feel comfortable), please take the @freefigure Fat Census- the link is in my profile. If you don't identify as fat but you do identify as an ally, please donate to @freefigure so they can keep this shit going.
Throwback to kicking it w/ @ariannahuff at the @thrive #fuellist event last week. No words to express my gratitude. ☄️☄️☄️
