Happy Tuesday magic makers! I hope you are all shiny happy people!
Question: If you were a magician, which element would you like to control, earth, air, fire or water?
If you've had a look at my stories recently you'll already know I really enjoyed An Unkindness Of Magicians by Kat Howard.
Modern New York is given a bitter and brutal undetone. It's a place where magical houses battle for supremacy, where money and magic go hand in hand and terrible sacrifices must be made. But cracks are appearing, shadows are escaping and magic itself is failing. Enter Sydney, an unknown and powerful magician who may be the magical worlds only hope. One problem, Sydney doesn't want to help the system, she wants to tear it down.
This book is bleak, at times it's depressing and but it's also breathtaking in its imagination. Beneath the veneer of privilege and champagne the world Howard portrays is utterly brutal. The plot is fast paced, which doesn't allow for as much character development or descriptive passages as I personally would have liked, but her writing style -sharp as broken glass and to the point- makes up for it. That said I felt the climax of the story was over too quickly and more could have been done to really amp the tension.
So what I'm really saying is I loved the worldbuilding and the characters and wanted even more of both. Also, I appreciated the ending, I was not prepared and I didn't see it coming.
Writers, read this book to see how to craft a complex but fast moving plot. Also how to describe and write a complex magical proceducre on the page so that the reader understands what is happening and feels like it's familiar, even though you haven't actually explained anything! .
