While exploring the downtown library the other day in Reno, I could hear a piano playing in the distance. The keys were full of dramatic tones, and the voice carrying the keys was bellowing behind glass walls. The tones and tunes that continued to play song after song had peaked my interest. I wandered into the empty room, thinking how could anyone miss this performance, to see a man playing on the stage in a room fit for fifty. I sat in the back pews as he continued to play and welcome whoever came into the room. He asked for a recording, so I knew he had let his guard down to the camera in my hand. I approached him and asked, “may I make your portrait as a gift to you?” and he said sure. What I had discovered was that he had given up his family as he rambled with withdrawals. I could tell he had not lived an easy life lately. He began to say he had given up his family in pursuit of his passion, which was to live a life of rock n’ roll. You could tell he bled with passion, but that those passions had drawn him down a deep dark path. I can only hope that he can find the light that allows him to create and maybe once again, his family.
