For the final day of #equinoxyoga21 #equinoxchallenge I chose Vrksasana or Tree Pose.
Asana: pose, posture
I love this pose because there is so much to be gained beyond balance. It is much more complicated than I thought when I first started yoga. As one of the first poses learned, it seems simple enough. But as my practice has advanced I realize how much more difficult it can be made. Of course you can have a weak, lazy tree pose. But you can also have a strong, tall tree pose that makes you work as much as any of the more advanced postures and the movements required all flow into other poses as well. The hips are the same as Virabhadrasana II/Warrior II, the spine is long and straight like in any pose that's not a back bend, both feet are super grounded, one to the floor and the other pressing into the leg as the leg presses back, the shoulders are together down the back reaching all the way up through the finger tips to the sky. Tree Pose is also a fun starting place for moving into Hasta Padangusthasana I and II, Virabhadrasana III, Ardha Chandrasana and many other one legged balancing poses. I love the challenge of starting from and returning to this pose as I really work my standing leg and do my best to not fall out of it! Falling is fun too though, because then I get to do it again!
What is your favorite balancing pose?
