Roti John literally translates as “John’s bread”. The dish takes its name from a once common form of address for Caucasians (“John”) while roti is a Malay term for “bread”. This street food is widely available in Malaysia and Singapore.
Urban legend has it that in the 60's, a caucasian asked a street vendor in Singapore for a hamburger. As hamburgers were not available, the ingenious street vendor spreads minced lamb and onions between slices of bread loaf and fried the concoction in egg as a substitute. Someone overheard the street vendor saying to the customer, “Silakan makan ROTI, JOHN”, which literally translates as “Please eat this bread, John”. The name “Roti John” then caught on.
