Welding, it’s just like driving. Your eyes have to constantly be moving as you run your beads.
This is a diagram I draw for all my students. Each section has its own function and own importance. The arrow represents the direction you are going. As you are welding, you have to be looking forward and making sure you are going in the right direction and staying straight.
The sides of the drawing represent your eyes watching your weld tie into the base metal or previous bead. You have to watch the edges and make sure they are washing into the bead you are overlapping. Make sure it is penetrating the base material or filler passes.
You also have to watch for defects such as, undercutting, overlapping properly or leaving a valley. The last part of the diagram is watching your bead build up and form properly. As you are welding, you have to watch how the puddle is forming to be able to judge how fast you need to go, how much filler you need to add or if you need to turn up the heat. .
As you are welding in order to be consistent you have to be able to constantly watch every part as you are going. It’s just like driving, you can’t just stare straight and hope for the best because that will end badly every time!
