My love for helping others started at a young age. I do admit that I had no clue what I wanted to do. I would tell my parents I wanted to be a doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher, etc. I clearly remember the moment I discovered social work. I instantly fell in love with the profession and went to my parents and said, “This is what I want to do! I want to be a social worker.” I had finally found my calling in life. Though I believe now it was always my calling, it just took a little time to discover.
I worked full time to pay for the local community college I was attending at night. I was exhausted, I lost weight, and I was at my wits end. I was reaching the point of having to transfer to a Social Work program. When I saw the tuition rates I immediately lost all hope, I couldn’t afford it. I was headed to the bank to discuss loans when I received an email stating that I received a scholarship that would pay for seven semesters of tuition. It was truly one of the happiest days of my life. Neither of my parents went to college and my life goal was to make them proud. In my journey, I have learned what it is to be proud of myself. I have learned to continue dreaming, because no dream is unrealistic. I believe everyone should be able to set a goal for themselves and I want to be the person that helps them get there.
Fast forward to 2017, I received a Master's degree in Social Work. It has blessed me with a wonderful job where I can serve clients in need every single day in my hometown. It’s the little achievements every day that keep this smile on my face and my heart full.
