Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified village, or ksar, located on a hill overlooking the Ouarzazate River. It is made up of several small fortresses (Kasbahs) which are approximately ten meters in height. The village was once a stop along the ancient Sahara Trade Route where traders carrying cargos of slaves, spices and other goods would pause to rest on their way to Timbuktu or the Western Sahara.
It was at the top of my bucket list for our trip. Not just because it’s the setting for so many movies - Gladiator, Time Bandits, Marco Polo, The Jewel of the Nile, The Living Daylights, The Last Temptation of Christ,Sky, The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, One Night with the King, Son of God - not to mention Game of Thrones.
It’s an epic sight as you travel north from southern Morocco heading to the Atlas Mountains - and on to Marrakech.
