The evolution of The Garrote from The Executioners Dungeon Playset. Garotting appears to have developed from The Ottoman Empire or Ancient China's as their preferred method of execution known as The Bow-string, both are credited. Earliest records intricate it's use in 1561 A.D. of a Ottoman Prince. Bowstring executions were reserved for high officials & members of the ruling family. The Prince was tied to an upright post with two holes bored in it through which the ends of a cord from a long bow was passed & pulled tight round the neck by the executioner until he was strangled to death. Later a stool would be added to lessen the struggle & its use evolved to the prisoner commonly being seated a top a short post w/ their back to a post & a rope loop placed round the neck & around the post. The executioner twisted a stick inserted in the loop to tighten the rope and strangle the prisoner. Still a more humane method of execution was sought & various improvements continued to be made evolving to The Catalan Garotte & be comprised of a wooden stool on which the prisoner sat w/ their back to the post. The condemned was strapped at the wrists, arms, waist and legs and the hinged iron collar closed around the neck. A heavy screw operated by a handle or a weighted lever connected to a spike that ran through the post. When the screw/lever mechanism was operated, the spike entered the criminal's neck & severed the spinal column, in an attempt to ensure that the prisoner didn't simply strangle to death.
Lastly, since World War II, The Garrote Wire was regularly employed as a weapon by soldiers as a silent means of enemy personnel. Instruction of clandestine garrottes is included in the training of elite military units & special forces. A typical military Garrote Wire consists of two wooden handles attached to a length of flexible wire; the wire is looped over a sentry's head & pulled taut in one motion. It was the Close-Range weapon made notorious by the The Mafia & is also used by the U.S. C.I.A. METAL! #epictoyart
