Acadia National Park. The memories I’ve made in this place will last forever. A week spent camping, hiking, cooking, and photographing with some good company was exactly what I needed. I could write about how I would love to go back and stay longer, but I went there and did exactly what I wanted to do. For that, I am grateful and content with my time spent there. Now, it’s time for me to gear up and get ready for some big plans in the future

Our chapter loves supporting nursing students! They are such an integral part of the nursing community because they're our future and we hope to make them feel valued whenever they take the initiative to join us at meetings, outreach, etc. This is a #throwback to our chapter sponsoring breakfast at the recent welcome event for the @uclanursing incoming class for their #AdvancedPractice and the #Masters Entry Clinical Nurse programs🤓✏📚🔬🎓

Anyone else hear about the new study published in the fight against the opioid crisis? NPR covered the study which took the unique approach of sending mindful letters to inform prescribing physicians of their patients who died from opioid overdose. The study reported a reduction in opioid prescription within their intervention group. It turns out that physicians are commonly unaware of when their patient dies from overdosing under their prescription. The article highlights differing views on the pros and cons of such an intervention.

And, heads-up: AACN recently gave a free webinar to it's members exploring this very topic. This, as well as countless other learning opportunities are archived and bountifully available to members via the AACN website. Endless CE's?? Sign me up!

Just a couple of more days until @vanessacamales, @travelingmonkey_, and @born2die_traveling and I leave for Acadia National Park. Life has been pretty crazy lately, but in a good way. My youngest brother, @markdanila, just started medical school. My middle brother just nailed a job interview for a new job. I just recently passed my CCRN, and I’m planning to shadow CRNAs and apply to CRNA schools by next year. On top of that, I’m also planning and paying for a wedding next year. I’ve also decided to take on some small projects around the house, and work in my landscaping and home improvement skills. In between all of that, I still go on a few hikes and photograph moments of my life for me to look back on

Its been a while since I’ve posted on the gram (for good reason), and it’s rare for me to post this side of my life (I’m going to do it more often). However, today marks a HUGE achievement in my nursing career. After countless hours of studying and taking a 3 hour exam, I am now certified in the specialty of critical care nursing. This exam validated my knowledge and skill as a critical care nurse, and will be a stepping stone for a doctorate degree in nursing with emphasis on becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Hard work really does pay off when you’re passionate about what you do

Woohoo! I'm a triple threat! This year has been a busy and productive one. I passed my CCRN in January, my Cardiac Medicine Certification in March, FAILED my Cardiac Surgery Certification in April, recouped, and passed it in July the second time!

Before every exam in nursing school I would look at these dudes, bump fists, and we would say, “today is a good day, boys.” We travelled to take our NCLEX together and did the same thing before we walked in the room for the test. Life has taken us in some different directions and I don’t get to see them as often as i would like but today we gather for Eric’s bachelor party and tailgate before a brewers game. Today is a good day, boys.

(Part 3/3) Don’t forget why we do what we do. “Name 10,000 reason why you never want to do and go tell someone who might’ve forgotten. Try to list the endless reasons why it’s good to be alive and then just smile for a while about them.” I do not care what unit you are in, we see people at an incredibly difficult time in their life. Any time someone is stuck in a hospital something unfortunate has happened to lead to them being there. Whether they are recovering from a knee surgery in an ortho unit or a cardiac arrest in the ICU, they need you and their families need you. As a nurse you must remind them what they are fighting for and give them encouragement. You must be an advocate for their needs and a champion for their success. What that success looks like is different for every patient. For some it is a full recovery, for some it is just making to the next big family event, and for some it may just be comfort and preparation for what comes next. Talk with your patients and their families and learn about them. Actively listen to their stories and use what you learn to personalize your care for them.
This can become difficult for many of us with our patients that are “frequent flyers”. We all have that patient that no matter the resources you give them or the help you provide, they end up right back in the same situation just a few months later. Please do not ever stop trying to reach these patients. Please do not ever lose compassion for these patients. You never know when one day your teaching will stick or something you say or do will reignite their spark and their willingness to take charge of their health. Please understand that the impacts you make daily are exponential.
Lastly. “Soon the sun will rise and another day will come. Soon enough the sun will set another day will be gone.”
One of the best pieces of advice that I ever received was that this is a 24 hour job. You will not accomplish it all in one twelve hour shift. There will be tasks that you have left undone for the next shift and you cannot beat yourself up for that. Just focus on the good you did accomplish and the impacts you made through your words and actions.

(Part 2/3) Stop being so hard on yourself. “Think of all the things that are wrong with your life & then fix them”
Feeling like you are not where you want to be in your career is such a common feeling. I personally have been really hard on myself recently for not challenging myself more at work & stepping up to take more complex patients. But maybe for you it is that you are in a unit that just doesn’t fit your career goals anymore or you are on a shift that has negative impacts on your lifestyle. You have to step back & think about what your next steps are going to be. Is it going to a new unit within your hospital or a new hospital all together? Are you someone who needs to travel & doesn’t like being tethered to one place. Or maybe you are like me & just need to step it up & educate yourself further on illnesses you deal with daily so you can just feel more comfortable. “Think of all the things that you love about your life. Be thankful you are blessed with them.” This is a simple thing to say but sometimes hard to do. It takes effort to count your blessings & recognize the gifts you have been given. Acknowledge your friends, families, & spouses who put up with your awful schedule & long hours. Maybe you work in a place with leadership that is supportive... be sure they know that their work isn’t going unnoticed. “Think of all the things that hold you back & realize you don’t need them.”
Make a list of the things that may negatively impact your life & figure out how to phase them out. This goes hand in hand with that first line in this verse. “Think of all the mistakes you have made & make sure to never repeat them”
THIS ONE IS HUGE FOR ME. I still think of mistakes I made three years ago when I first started nursing & fret about them sometimes but I am learning to use those as educational opportunities. The truth is that nurses are humans, humans are infallible, & mistakes will be made. It is up to you on how you choose to move forward from the mistake that will determine how you fair mentally & emotionally. Every mistake, no matter how small or large, is a learning opportunity for you to remember and never repeat. (Cont. in comments).

(Part 1/3) there is this song by Paul Baribeau called “ten things” and it is about life being too short to be hard on yourself and not have fun. I am posting a cover of the song in three sections and am going to relate some of the lyrics to life as a nurse.

Verse one to me is all about self care, which is one of the things I have tried to focus on a lot recently. I know that working long hours and burnout are not themes that are central to just nurses but they are something that is talked about a lot within the nursing community. I mean you can see it in the endless memes about trying to get ahold of a nurse on their days off and it is a picture of someone burrowed in a blanket with the tv remote and their favorite choice alcohol. We make these jokes and memes to poke fun but I think also as a coping mechanism to cushion the harsh truth that it is easy to get consumed by this career. It is easy to work 3-6 twelve hour shifts in a row and then spend a few days recouping just to turn around and do it all again. It can end up being a vicious cycle. I used to function like this all of the time... just work work work, sleep, binge TV, work work work, repeat. At first I thought that this was therapeutic for me but I started packing on weight, getting sick, and avoiding friends. At the start of this year I decided that on my off days I would focus more on my body, my hobbies, and my relationships with friends, family, and my wife. I still have a lot of work to do but I have lost weight, taken more weekend trips, tackled projects around the house, made new friends, and strengthened ties with old friends. You just have to start naming the things you want to do and then set your mind to actually do them. No more excuses. No more procrastinating. Just action.
