"To be encompassed by the brilliant earth
Breathing on all sides pungently
Into her vegetation's lapping mouths
Must feel such encroachment
As edges off your nerves to mine,
The hemming contact that's so trammelled
By love or look,
In death or out of death,
Glancing from the yellow nut,
Eyeing from the wax's tower,
Or white as milk, out of seeking dark,
The drooping as you close me in
A world of webs
I touch and break
I touch and break." ~ Dylan Thomas

🌼Rosa: Hi bookstagram! Recently, I've been in the mood to read short stories. Not only do I want to read them, but I've seen a lot of people on bookstagram asking for short story recommendations so I thought I would feature two of my favorite short story collections! .
.
.
🌼The first is a collection of Irene Nemirovsky's short stories, including David Golder and The Ball. I bought this edition without knowing who Nemirovsky was, and found out that she was a Jewish author who lived in France and unfortunately passed away in Auschwitz during World War II. Her stories are beautifully written and offer an amazing glimpse into early 20th century Europe. .
.
.
🌼The second book is an old Pocket Classics edition of Alexandre Dumas' short stories. He's obviously most well know for writing The Three Musketeers and The Count of Montecristo, but his short stories are just as intricately written as his novels. .
.
.
🌼Have any of you guys read either of these collections before? What is your favorite short story collection? .

Waiting for a pizza delivery, contemplating the "to be read" book pile. But a dystopian novel is the last thing I need right now, so meh.

Enjoyed this while wasps inspected my coffee on a cafe terrace this morning. Pretty great that Everyman Library got to do a collected edition of ‘His Dark Materials’. As usual they do a great job. There’s an introduction (will read after the novels), a foreword by Pullman, a fun chronology, and something that Pullman calls ‘lantern slides’ dotted through, which are micro short stories of just one paragraph. Anyway, I’m onto The Subtle Knife, having read the first one in Danish (a fun way to learn the language). The new Pullman novel set in this world (a prequel I think) is on order, so I’m ‘catching up’ before it’s released. Hope that you’re having a lovely Sunday.

Purples, pinks and lavenders for an obnoxiously feminine post 🌸🌺

1. Mark Watney from The Martian (I reaaaally need to stop including him in these lists haha!)
2. Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey
3. Robert from The Diary of a Provincial Lady (I find him so hilarious and so English that he's a borderline parody)
4. Remus Lupin from Harry Potter
5. Sherlock Holmes 🕵🏻

"Love is like a tree: it grows by itself, roots itself deeply in our being and continues to flourish over a heart in ruin."
🍃
I've finally completed one of my reading goals for this year... I've finished another one of Victor Hugo's novels. I had high hopes for The Hunchback of Notre Dame since I admire Les Miserables so much. This novel turned out to be equally beautiful and devastating. Quasimodo and La Esmeralda were multi-faceted characters who broke my heart. I already knew how it would end, but that didn't stop it from being so sad.
🍃
My reading experience wasn't the best, however, because I was reading an awful translation. The syntax and diction made it hard for me to understand Hugo's beautiful writing. I expected more from Everyman's Library.
🍃
What's the best book you've read lately?

#bookishlywriteysept17 Best fight scene (When Quasimodo is defending Notre Dame.... incredible)
#sixofcrowsseptember Prejudiced characters (Basically everyone was prejudiced against La Esmeralda and Quasimodo)

"Until I die there will be those moments, moments seeming to rise up out of the ground like Macbeth's witches, when his face will come before me, that face in all its changes, when the exact timbre of his voice and tricks of his speech will nearly burst my ears, when his smell will overpower my nostrils..."

I love Eliot's works for the fragrance of morality, moral choices, idea of luck, and destiny that he spreads in them. George Eliot perfectly weaves two great stories together in this novel, the story of Gwendolen Harleth, the caricature of spoilt beauty who married for money, and that of the mysterious hero of the title who is in search of his true destiny. Apart from these two stories, I found hundred more in this book.
The line that I loved the most in this book: "She was not afraid of any outward dangers — she was afraid of her own wishes, which were taking shapes possible and impossible, like a cloud of demon-faces" (pg753)

As much as I loved learning English ,Poetry and English Lit at school i could never quite get my head round the story in the poems ..and what it all meant. Now being a little older i finally understand the depth and beauty of some of the writing and have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about my fave poets/writers .
