It's time for an early 2017 #VinylAndBeerSunday. The temperature outside is brutally frigid - but I am warm inside my office spinning a recently acquired copy of the 1986 debut album from BRUCE HORNSBY AND THE RANGE. I remember when I came across a cassette version of this album when I was living in Southern California in 1986. It was on sale at one of the stores and seeing the Hornsby name caught my eye. I bought it without hearing it and popped it in the player of my car. I was immediately drawn into the power pop piano driven songs such as ON THE WESTERN SKYLINE, THE WAY IT IS, and EVERY LITTLE KISS. The song that blew me away (and still does) is MANDOLIN RAIN. I have had the chance to see BRUCE HORNSBY on a solo tour and followed his stint with THE GRATEFUL DEAD. But this album still has a charm to it that some of his other work does not. In the recent years, I have discovered that we are distantly related...which is another reason why this album still is a personal gem. I found this vinyl copy at a local thrift store - and it was in fantastic condition. I have paired my HORNSBY FEST with a great IPA from the good folks at RHINEGEIST BREWERY. Their limited release ROAR is a powerful hoppy brew with Amarillo, Mosiac, and Citra hops. It has a refreshingly dry finish that makes it absolutely enjoyable. A perfect brew for a mid-1980s minor classic album. So.....What are you listening to tonight? What are you drinking?
