Evaristo Baschenis (Italian, 1617-1677), Boy with a Basket of Bread, oil on canvas, c.1655-65 (Private collection)
Baschenis was best known for still lifes, mostly detailed studies of kitchens and musical instruments. Instruments were especially popular, and his skill with the material garnered him the attention of a number of important patrons. Even so, Baschenis was largely forgotten as a skillful painter outside of his native region until recent years. Above he departs from his more traditional material, he turns his eye towards a living subject: interestingly the bread and clothing are treated with the most precise of detail, while the boy himself is rendered in a softer fashion.
