"My name if Beauregard Decker, ma'am. I am 21 years old and I own my own ranch up in Timber Hill, Montana, where I got a fine..." New York actor Don Murray (1929-) as naive cowboy Beau had never even ridden a horse when he lit up the screen opposite Monroe in her greatest role. Born in Hollywood the son of a Ziegfeld girl and a Dance Director was a fine sportsman but instead enrolled in AADA. Murray's breakout role on Broadway was in Williams "The Rose Tattoo." The Korean War interrupted his career, courageously as a conscientious objector he instead spent most of the next three years looking after war orphans overseas. Returning to Broadway in "The Skin of Our Teeth" Director Logan met his Beau and Murray was cast as the boisterous cowboy of "Bus Stop." A smash, Murray's debut landed him an Oscar nomination, costar Lange became his first wife and thanks to Monroe it remains his most famous film. The stark "A Hatful of Rain" with Saint was modest box-office with Murray insisting on playing the drug addicted war vet. "Bachelor Party" again was a little seen at the time gem. It was Westerns at Fox or modest dramas in the form of the IRA story "Shake Hands with the Devil" with Cagney before he produced the true story "The Hoodlum Priest." Its good intentions had some admirers but Murray's best performance was in the excellent political drama "Advise & Consent" as the blackmailed senator. More uplifting seminary drama in "One Man's Way" passed unnoticed with his last interesting big screen role playing second fiddle to McQueen in the fine "Baby, the Rain Must Fall." Always reliable on TV in many TV movies and series including the hit "Knots Landing" (79-93) for three seasons, making regular returns to the stage he was never less than effective on the big screen even when the films weren't. "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes", "Endless Love" and "Peggy Sue Got Married" were the most seen among many lesser ones. Not your typical movie star despite his good looks, Murray's priests, cowboys, senators, bookkeepers and fathers are all standouts thanks to this outstanding and serious actor, producer, writer and director.
