On many summer days I have got up from a long afternoon nap in my dormitory coughing up dust. I would then push aside my curtains fully to examine the source. Just across my window a pair of Gray Francolins would be enjoying a mud bath. The gravel on the path outside my room was especially powdery and these birds loved this spot. They would vigorously rub their bellies below on the gravel powder, then tilt sideways and scrub their wings then their necks and foreheads. The only thing they don't do is to roll over and scrape their backs. The two birds sit tightly together and as they jiggle around they end up scrubbing each other's feathers as well. A copious quantity of fine dust, like the soot from a chimney, is thrown up and everything ends up entering my room through the iron meshed windows. When the birds are done they leave behind two odd depressions on the pathway to my dormitory....
