Paper, ink and lemon juice, heat
Limited edition print by Aoife van Linden Tol with impact by Aoife van Linden Tol
Designed for the Make Your Mark participatory event which was held on Tuesday 16th of May in the Winter Garden at ESTEC. The project explores the concept of 'making a mark' in the context of the historical impact of scientific work, of physical cosmic impacts the Universe and how the significance of such events continue reveal themselves over time.
The print was designed using the United Nations Treaties and Principles on Outer Space. The form resembles the imagery of the surface of outer space bodies using a patchwork of multiple photographs. Personnel and guests from ESTEC were invited to 'make their mark' on one of the prints with a meteoroid soaked in lemon juice. After the prints dry the participants blast the print with a heat gun to reveal the design created by their unique impact.
I used the first page of each section of the Treaty which sets the intention behind the individual principles which follow. I especially fascinated with the language whereby each sentience starts with italic words such as believing, recognizing, affirming, desiring, recalling, wishing, inspired. This was a positive contrast to the kind of language I was expecting such as must, do, don't, can, can't, adhere, conform. #esa #europeanspaceagency #estec #sciart #bomb #circle #outerspacetreaty #makeyourmark #impact #participatoryart #print #limitededition
