Yesterday, a "special visitor" came to the Borel area that our non profit serves. President Jovenel Moise arrived with his farming machinery to harvest fields of rice that the government owns.
Now, I'm sure to those who don't understand the unemployment situation in Haiti.. you would think it is pretty cool for the President to be in the area.
One of Espwa's key employees in Haiti explained why this is so incredibly upsetting (especially to those in this extremely poor area). He explained, these Haitians don't have jobs because there are no jobs to be had. They work extremely hard harvesting fields by hand just to survive. These machines coming in are doing work that Haitians could be hired to do. But instead of helping the poor survive by providing jobs, they come in and basically rub it in their faces that they truly don't care about their welfare.
This is the type of situation that Espwa is trying to change. Attached in this post are 2 photos of Haitians harvesting a field (by hand) that were employed by Espwa! Creating jobs... being a hand up, not a hand out... that's what we are all about!
How would you feel if you were in this situation?
