A weekend well spent brings a week of content. #GoodVibes #LakeLife #EscapeToTheLake #Peaceful #OptOutside

"America's Coolest Small Town" ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป Winner of Budget Travel magazine's 10th annual award, Grand Marais typifies the small American town that is both hip and humble, the magazine says. The population must be less than 10,000 people for winning towns.๐Ÿ› โš“๏ธ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ๐ŸŸ
"Budget Travel defines a 'cool' small town as one with an energetic vibe, often blending community spirit with a vibrant arts scene, unique local history and gorgeous scenery," ๐Ÿ› โš“๏ธ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ๐ŸŸ"With a population of only 1,351, Grand Marais is a great example of that something extra small towns often have -- in this case, a very happening outdoors scene right alongside music and contemporary art." ๐Ÿ› โš“๏ธ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ๐ŸŸ #greatroadtrip

Next stop is "Gichi-biitoobiig" which, in Ojibwe means "great duplicate water," "parallel body of water" or "double body of water" (like a bayou), a reference to the two bays which form the large harbor off Lake Superior. ๐ŸŒŠ #greatroadtrip #grandmaraismn

#woodpaneling โค๏ธ loving the cozy vibes and authentic eateries along the MN #northshore / ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ˜‹Supper clubs also were tied to the drinking culture in their early years. To go for a drink to what we now would call a "bar," a tavern, or saloon, was considered low class by some societal standards in the Midwest. Post-Prohibition supper clubs allowed diners to mix drinking and dinner in a respectable, middle-class establishment.
As the middle class prospered following World War II, supper clubs kept up with the times. Going to a supper club 50 years ago meant linen table service, a wide range of liquors, entertainment, music and even dancing. We wish we could have stayed at @wunderbarmn for the folk band, but we had to #hittheroad ๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ’จ

We went for the #spizzicare ๐Ÿ˜‹ Supper clubs are a longstanding #tradition of the Upper Midwest. When the first ones began popping up in the 1930s and 1940s, they were often destination restaurants offering up drinks, dinner, and entertainment. They were usually located outside of towns, and most times located near or on a lake. When Prohibition ended in 1933, liquor licenses were first granted to establishments outside city limits, roadhouses and such, that served food. They were only open in the evenings, for supper, not for lunch, and the "supper club" was born. @wunderbarmn #greatroadtrip ๐Ÿด๐Ÿท๐Ÿฒ

The vintage โ€œHarbor Light Supper Clubโ€ sign out front on Hwy 61 may be what beckoned us into recently re-vamped Wunderbar, but itโ€™s โ€œOwner/Dream Weaverโ€ Terry Downing who will have us coming back. Sheโ€™s taken over the joint - a time-capsuled working manโ€™s supper club whose doors were shut over 20 years ago - and has big plans to re-kindle the ethos of Upper Midwest supper clubs past. A place to build community and foster dreams. Art, music, performance, culinary delightsโ€ฆ all under one roof. And if youโ€™d like, you can stay the night at her glampground. โค๏ธ #greatroadtrip @wunderbarmn

Canoe across Lake Superior in -10 C?? Why not! Father Baraga's Cross marking where he was most luckily washed ashore on a bad day on the water in 1846. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป #greatroadtrip

The lake effect kicks in and it drops below -10 C (we knew we couldn't escape it!) just as we go to check out Father Baraga's Cross - A cross that doesn't mark a place of death, but a beacon of salvation and lake-side celebration ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿผ#greatroadtrip @thebellegame
