💰The Equal Pay Warrior: Erica Joy Baker💰
Baker had been working for Google, first as a field tech and then an engineer, for almost a decade when she and a few coworkers were discussing pay transparency and the “chilling effect” companies instill by discouraging employees from discussing compensation with each other. One day, she suggested that they all put their own salaries in an internal spreadsheet.
The sheet quickly spread and only continued to grow after she left the company to work at Slack in 2015. Two years later, a section was published in @nytimes, revealing the company’s disheartening gender pay gap.

This week’s #spotlightfriday is on Erica Baker , the director of engineering at Kickstarter 🔧👩🏻‍💻. She is mostly known for publishing a spreadsheet of salaries of Google, her former employer.

From then, she has been an active speaker and advocate for inclusion and diversity in tech. She co-founded Project Include, a non- profit that aims to provide “companies with guidelines for accelerating diversity and inclusion hence giving everyone a fair chance to succeed in tech.” (Project Include)

Project Include takes on an interesting approach as their target are CEOs. Erica believes that instead of hiring heads of diversity, it should instead be CEOs taking charge of diversity and inclusion that way it becomes everyone’s responsibility.
She’s also a board of director for Girl Develop it, a nonprofit organization that provides “affordable programs for adult women interested in learning web and software development in a judgment-free environment.” (Girl Develop It)
They aim to create a network and community of women that are empowered and feel confident to grow their skills in coding.
It takes courage to choose to speak out and for that reason, I appreciate her. There is a lot of injustice in this world and it’s encouraging to see women like Erica saying no and instead doing the most they can to shine a light on topics that people never really want to talk about nor acknowledge.
I read an interview she did and what really stood out for me was her career advice: “Be true to yourself, but if you want to do this, if you want to advance and be a force, you have to be true to yourself and not stray from that.” Erica Baker

At the end of the day, that's all we really aim to to be 😊

Erica Joy Baker [Day 23] Baker started playing with computers when she was 12. Self taught, she loved taking things apart to see how they ticked. That analytical drive isn’t the only thing that made her an engineer recruited by Google and now by Slack. She also refuses to adhere to the status quo. As a kid, she wore a jeans jacket covered in buttons. Her favorite: Question Authority.

At Google, she did just that, repeatedly asking for the company’s diversity numbers only “to get shot down all the time.” She also rallied her colleagues to create a spreadsheet of their salaries which she says exposed some inequity issues.

Now she is addressing a much larger audience. Baker is making a name for herself by saying very publicly what people of color typically don’t dare for fear of losing their positions in the industry. In consciousness-raising essays on Medium and in a steady stream of pointed comments on Twitter, she calls out the tech industry for only focusing diversity efforts on women to the detriment of people of color.

With the blessing of Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, Baker spends 20% of her time on advocating for women and men of color and working to improve their lives in the tech world. “I see as my duty to hold companies accountable until stuff gets better,” she says. “I am trying to keep moving the needle, to make sure the stuff that we didn’t talk about, the stuff that gets brushed under the rug, gets discussed and gets solved.” #EricaJoyBaker #blacksintechnology #mitechdontsleep

"I can not stand here and keep my well rehearsed lines about diversity in the tech industry when there are much more important things to do: Save the world". - Erica Joy Baker
