Elizabeth Berkley once said "I will never forget experiencing Venice for the first time. It feels like you are transported to another time – the art, music, food and pure romance in the air is like no other place". For me, this quote describes my first experience in Venice best.
Do you know that this place is actually designed not for pedestrians? The people who walk on land or bridges are usually servants and pheasants, while the masters roam the island by gondolas. The gondola ride for 30 minutes is quite pricey - 80€ per ride at least. However, you can experience gondola ride just for 2€ by asking a gondolier to help you cross a canal for 3-6 minutes.
Known as the city of masks, people will just think of the mask festivals that last for weeks. However, there is an ancient history behind every mask. One of then is a little black mask for the courtesans. This mask has something to bite on so the courtesans cannot speak until a man unlift her mask. It was considered very seductive for men that age of time. The small size allows men to see some part of the courtesans' skin. If there are rashes, men will not spend a single penny on her since she might have syphillis. The white mask used by rich people only covers until nose thus allowing them to eat and drink while still covering their identity.
For one day, I learned so much about the peculiarities this city has. Despite the rising sea level and deteriorating structure that may destroy Venice little by little, Venice is truly a gem by the sea. Grazie, Venezia!
