I'd like to introduce the two newest members of the Unbridled Herd! This beautiful duo have been to hell and back, but they are finally safe, and will be coming to live with the herd very soon.
This beautiful mare is an 8 year old Andalusian, a broodmare who likely was a part of the "foaling-mill" epidemic that California has been experiencing - where people who have no business breeding horses do it anyways, often breeding Andalusians and Friesians (the two favorite breeds for "dancing-horses" which is what these barns often breed and train for) in poor conditions, with little to no handling, in an attempt to sell the foals for the high prices that Friesians and Andalusians do when bred at quality breeding facilities. Very often these attempted breeding businesses fall apart and I frequently see the mares and foals for sale at dirt cheap prices on back page sale sites all over California. Usually wormy looking, unhandled, with papers many times, and sold with the "potential for being a dancing horse" looming over them.
This particular mare was dumped at auction with another, beautiful Andalusian filly who caught the eye of a local woman who had gone to this livestock auction, which is a notorious slaughter supplier. She had a suspicion that this mare was pregnant, although there was no information on their history whatsoever. This angel realized that the mare was at high risk for purchase by the slaughter buyers, and she bought her to save her from that horrible fate. A week after bringing the two home, the mare gave birth to a beautiful filly! When I heard about their story, and that this woman was looking to find them a home with someone who could train them (as neither have much handling experience and she didn't have the time nor desire to work through all their issues), I couldn't help myself, and decided to bring them in to the herd!
That was a few weeks ago, and the filly is now a month old, mama is packing on weight, and I am preparing to bring them home. My heart is so full of love and joy at the prospect of giving these two a new lease on life, they are such incredible souls and I cannot wait to embark on this healing journey.
