Hope everyone had a great week! The newest chapter in my animation chronicles: "Englishman in New York" by the One and Only...Sting, former frontman of The Police. Now, this video comes at good timing, because not only is it Gay Pride Month, but it's also Pride Festival weekend, so the message in this song is poignant enough I believe.
Sting wrote this song in dedication to his friend and gay icon, Quentin Crisp, a quite eccentric comedian, novelist, actor, and activist. The late Crisp made no qualms about stating who he truly was inside and out, a very androgynist, vocal image for the LGBT community. This song follows his decision he shared with Sting to permanently live out his days in an apartment in New York.
Sting says that the song was "partly about me and partly about Quentin. Again, I was looking for a metaphor. Quentin is a hero of mine, someone I know very well. He is gay and he was gay at a time in history when it was dangerous to be so. He had people beating up on him on a daily basis, largely with the consent of the public." We still live in suck a homophobic society, Crisp suffered this in droves with physical bullying in his youth. It's difficult to be different when people create hierarchies of the status quo, or the norm. It takes courage to "be yourself, no matter what they say." So this lyric video pays a lot of direct homage to the actual music video, also filmed in the streets of New York in black and white, and I wanted to capture that essence here. Sting has one of those iconic, golden, sultry, immediately recognizable voices like Sade and their like. Also he shares a birthday with my little sister, so he MUST be cool, lol!
