________________________________Conditioning programs have traditionally been implemented on the basis of a false dichotomous view of exercise bioenergetics.This in turn has enabled a false anaerobic vs. aerobic perspective on conditioning or "metabolic training" with the equally false notion that specific types of conditioning stress specific energy systems which ultimately promote specific adaptations in a particular energy system in isolation. IMO, the term "anaerobic exercise or training" is a misnomer because high to max effort exercise (classically known as anaerobic) is in fact highly aerobic. Aerobic ATP production is at its capacity and the cardiovascular system is working it's hardest to supply the oxygen. However, the ATP demand of working muscles during max effort exercise exceeds the rate at which the aerobic systems can provide it, mainly due to limited oxygen availability and mitochondrial factors. This initiates the use of backup systems that do not require oxygen like the phosphogen (ATP-PCr) system & carb metab is cut short prior to the pathway that requires O2 rendering only few ATP per carb molecule. Therefore during high to max effort exercise the ATP demand is satisfied both aerobically & anaerobically, not just anaerobically. Therefore, you cannot train anaerobic ATP production in isolation. Specificity of conditioning programs should not be based on the sense that one can isolate and "train" any particular bioenergetics system. Conditioning programs should be based on optimally improving the athletes capacity to 1. produce ATP aerobically at higher work loads, 2. reduce anaerobic contributions of ATP at higher work loads, and 3.contend with the fatigue inducing environment of anaerobic conditions (increased carnosine & bicarbonate buffering capacity and lactate recycling). These are the factors, that promote fatigue resistance, not from some unique improvement in "anaerobic fitness". Research demonstrates a wide variety of conditioning modes that promote the aforementioned adaptations, even those commonly referred to as "anaerobic".

In a culture where One Arm Chins, Planches, Front Levers, Heavy Squats, and movement are all seen as super sexy, I think something that goes under-rated is simple walking.

Walking isn't going to get you to being able to pull yourself up by one arm or being able to stand on one hand, but it can help you be able to recover from those sessions and get you back into training sooner.

Low intensity aerobic work is a great tool in your box for recovery. This is for several reasons.

CNS: Your central nervous system is what gets all those muscles you built in the gym to actually contract and move things. If it's beat down and always jacked up from a lot of intense work, it won't work as well and your gains will slow and/or stall. Low level aerobic activity is great because it can help wind this down and relax you so you can recover and get back to the intense work we all love.

Body: Another benefit of low intensity aerobic work, like walking, is that you get some blood flow without causing an entire "workout". Since it's so low intensity, your body doesn't really recognize it as a "workout". You won't need 12 hours of sleep, a foam rolling session, and ten gallons of PWO protein after an easy walk like this. In fact, it often is restorative because it allows you to improve blood flow and circulation without causing stress.

So for the price of a half hour to an hour on rest days, you can increase your recovery and get more gains just by adding in some walking. Plus if you do it during the right time of day, you can use it to up your Vitamin D levels!

Shown here is my pedometer for today. Hit nearly 19,000 steps already and not even finished. But on an average day, 10,000 is a good number to shoot for.
