We need your help today to protect community cats in Banana Shire, Queensland. The local government announced a plan to pay a bounty for dead community cats. The local government will pay private individuals $10 for the scalp of an adult cat and $5 for the scalp of a kitten.
Australia has a long history of killing community cats. Australia's environment minister, Greg Hunt, announced a plan in 2015 to kill 2 million community cats by 2020. The government funding for this plan went towards baiting, shooting and poisoning the community cats. Now Banana Shire is implementing their cruel bounty plan. Australian politicians, such as Mount Isa MP Rob Katter and Bulloo Mayor John Ferguson, have called for more local bounties on community cats to be implemented in the past.
That is why it is so important for you to act today. The Australian government needs to know that their bounty plan is cruel and ineffective. This plan directly facilitates animal cruelty by encouraging private citizens to go out and shoot innocent animals. Not only is this plan deadly for community cats, but companion animals that are allowed outdoors as well. Trap-neuter-return is the only humane and effective solution to cat overpopulation. A study of TNR in Australia found that TNR reduced the number of cats over time and improved the health and welfare of the cats. This study also found that Australia’s current method of killing the cats is ineffective (Tan, Rand & Morton, 2017). We urge Banana Shire to reverse their destructive bounty and implement trap-neuter-return instead as a humane solution to the overpopulation of cats.
