Finally got around to hanging up these space pictures this weekend! This picture doesn't do any of them justice. #titan #earth #jupiter #mars #enceladus

This week the Cassini spacecraft completed its first flyby of the north pole of Enceladus, Saturn's most interesting moon, sending back a collection of pictures of its fascinating pockmarked surface. Head to PopularMechanics.com to see more! [Link in bio]

Two of Saturn's moons, Dione (near) and Enceladus (far), are seen in this NASA image taken with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on September 8th 2015 and released on November 17th 2015. The two moons are composed of nearly the same materials, although Enceladus appears brighter against the dark night sky. The surface of Enceladus endures a constant rain of ice grains from its south polar jets. As a result, its surface is fresher and brighter than Dione's older, weathered surface. Peace Saturn ✌️✨
- Cassini spacecraft left earth in 1997, now passing though Saturn's rings 22 times, starting at the 'F ring' (the outermost of the main rings). In September, after orbiting between the planet and the closest ring will be 'The Grand Finale' when it'll intentionally crash into Saturn so the probe doesn't contaminate Saturn's icy moons❄️🌙

So this just happened. #cassini photographed #Enceladus who's named after the opponent of Athena. Does that make him the opposite of love? Ask #brotherkwan - he was there. The features are called Y-shaped incongruities, that must mean something.

My song Cryovolcanism is now on SoundCloud! I think of it as part melancholy love song to the universe, part rally cry for science and discovery. It was inspired by watching too many space documentaries and by the beautiful photos taken by the Cassini probe of Saturn and its moons. Like this picture of my muse, Enceladus. Cryovolcanism is the eruptive or intrusive processes analogous to volcanism occurring at low temperatures. Link to SoundCloud in bio.

Gravity is a property of all matter, and is caused by the mass of an object bending space & time around it. We know this from one of the consequences of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, which can be demonstrated by viewing gravitational lensing (view my previous post about that, if you're interested.) - the concept of light bending around an object between it's viewer & it's source. Objects with higher mass will have a greater gravitational influence on neighbouring celestial bodies, than objects with less mass. The Earth's affect on our moon is much less drastic than Saturn's affect on Enceladus. Now, because of Saturn's massive gravitational influence on Enceladus (I also went less in depth about Enceladus in a previous post, you can find that too if you like.), the small moon is literally distorted, which causes friction (and thus heat) beneath it's surface. As Enceladus is made mostly of frozen water, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, this friction & heat causes massive geysers to send water flying into space. As this water hits the cold vacuum of space, it freezes into Saturn's E ring, the thin ring furthest from the planet. #saturn #gravity #enceladus #moon #einstein #relativity #science #astronomy

The Earth as seen from Saturn (+ Jupiter). Cassini Inspires. Em homengem ao fim da missão da sonda Cassini em Saturno, a NASA lançou uma campanha nas redes sociais para que as pessoas compartilhem criações artísticas inspiradas nas lindas imagens capturadas pelas lentes da sonda.

Crescent Enceladus
Image Credit: Cassini Imaging Team, SSI, JPL, ESA, NASA
Explanation: Peering from the shadows, the Saturn-facing hemisphere of tantalizing inner moon Enceladus poses in this Cassini spacecraft image. North is up in the dramatic scene captured last November as Cassini's camera was pointed in a nearly sunward direction about 130,000 kilometers from the moon's bright crescent. In fact, the distant world reflects over 90 percent of the sunlight it receives, giving its surface about the same reflectivity as fresh snow. A mere 500 kilometers in diameter, Enceladus is a surprisingly active moon. Data collected during Cassini's flybys and years of images have revealed the presence of remarkable south polar geysers and a possible global ocean of liquid water beneath an icy crust.
