We have all been pretty excited — ducklings! Last autumn we had our first broody hen & hatched chicks but the anticipation of ducklings has been a extra special. One of our Swedish Blue mamas went broody a number of weeks ago and just this morning our first duckling hatched — meet bonny! Three more pipped their way out of their shells throughout the day — butter, maple & honey. There are a few more eggs tucked under mama duck, so I imagine Father's Day will be filled with even more excitement. It's such a simple thing really but having my children experience animals being born, even just a ducking, makes me so glad — the children are so calm & nurturing and the ducklings, goodness! As fuzzy and soft as can be — more in my stories! #eliotsanimals

'Why did you do all this for me?' he asked. 'I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you.' 'You have been my friend,' replied Charlotte. 'That in itself is a tremendous thing.' — E.B. our chicks started to hatch this week, such an incredible experience for our family but in particular eliot who has put so much care and attentiveness into our flock & broody hens. the first ones born here at our homestead, making it all very real ... putting the farmy-ness into the farm. happy friday dear friends! 🐣 even more cuteness on my stories ... #eliotsanimals

we found little charlie abandon on the ground with no sign of mama. eliot has such a tender heart and scooped him right up. the little guy seemed barely alive but el has nursed him back to health in just a couple days. we are not quite sure what kind of squirrel he is 🐿 but he's so darn cute!

those who live in quiet places have the opportunity to become acquainted with themselves, to think their own thoughts and live their own lives in a way that is not possible for those keeping up with the crowd. — laura ingalls wilder 🌿 oh, to be free from keeping up with any crowds, yes .. yes! 🌿 my oldest son asks on a near daily basis when we'll be getting the family cow and my youngest son, a horse. soon, children, soon. #eliotsanimals

today as a giant grey stork-like bird flew low overhead, i realized all the wild my children are experiencing. we seem to receive daily visits up on the hill from some wild animal passing by & on most days my oldest ends up with someone in his hands. never apprehensive, he'll help and hold them all. this little birdy flew in our cottage and hit the wall & later flew out of his hands. #eliotsanimals

every day, in a 100 small ways, our children ask, ‘do you hear me? do you see me? do I matter?’ their behavior often reflects our response.” — l.r. knost 🐓 when I lay in bed at night i'll think about the day and my children and the things i didn't get to fully listen to or give my attention or engage in and instead of feeling too busy or guilty or lousy i'll carry on with these conversations tomorrow and the next day & our relationship surely deepens. 🐓 i think this one has the same sort of conversations with his hens, they affectionately named her missy. #eliotsanimals

another day, another duckie. 💙 i love the rhythm of life animals bring to our family. have a wonderful friday, friends!
