Sometimes things just go wrong.
These ears belong to Gemelo, not a criollo but a P.R.E. gelding. His rider has basically introduced me to horse-trekking. Merceditas and me have done a couple of trips with the two of them.
This picture was taken by Vicente on the last day of our trip to the Rhine Falls. By that time, Gemelo was already quite tired and obviously not paying any attention on what he was doing.
We stopped to take this picture. Gemelo turned around to graze (on this very narrow path!), his hind leg stepped into the river and bit by bit he slipped into the Rhine. Vicente jumped off him right in time. Gemelo was already in the water, though, with the whole tack and all the saddle bags. He swam downstream and tried a couple of time to climb the river bank, which is quite steep there with a lot of big rocks in the water. Vicente walked next to him trying to comfort him and finding a good spot where Gemelo could get out of the water, which he finally managed to do. Gemelo was completely fine, not a single scratch, but everything was soaked. Fortunately, it was not much further to the meeting point where we were picked up by a horse trailer. By the time we arrived there Gemelo was dry again. That night, however, Vicente had to turn his whole flat into a tack room with the wet saddle, bridle, saddle blankets and bags spread out to dry.
While I was waiting with Merceditas for Vicente and Gemelo to return, I looked around and what lay on the ground: Vicente's iPhone. He can't remember it, but he must have thrown it away while jumping off. And this is how we got this picture!
(I won't make a joke about falling in to the Rhine and the Rhine Falls. That's too obvious.)
